Theory of Harmony
Anyone schoenverg basic musical knowledge should find this book to be interesting and amazingly informative. More accessible than most music theory or harmonic analysis books, it has the unique feature because it was intended intially for students of asking for examples of each principle to be completed by the reader.

Schoenberg was also a painter, an important music theorist, and an influential teacher of composition; his students included Alban Berg, Anton Webern, Hanns Eisler, Mankale Wellesz, and later John Cage, Lou Harrison, Earl Kim, and many other prominent musicians.

This work really must be read over an extended period of time– I found it quite difficult to read for long sittings– and the reader should expect to skip over sections.
